At the turn of the millennium, DARPA’s SensIT program imagined battlefields and disaster zones instrumented with hundreds of cheap, battery-powered sensors. The hard question was architectural: with radios costing far more energy than computation, how should a network think?

AICIP’s answer inverted the standard model: instead of streaming data to a fusion center, send the computation to the data. The lab’s mobile-agent-based collaborative processing framework dispatched lightweight software agents through the network, accumulating partial inference at each node — cutting energy use and surviving node failures that would cripple centralized designs. The framework, laid out in a 2001 IEEE TSMC paper and a widely cited 2003 Proceedings of the IEEE article on distributed sensor networks for target classification, became one of the recognized paradigms of the field.

The program produced foundational results beyond agents: the grid-coverage approach to sensor deployment (IEEE Transactions on Computers, 2002) remains one of the lab’s most-cited papers, and later work on distributed smart-camera networks won the Best Paper Award at ACM/IEEE ICDSC 2009. The line’s legacy is stamped on the lab itself — it is the “collaborative information processing” in AICIP, and the basis of Dr. Qi’s IEEE Fellow citation.
